Home of the cheese and truffle croquettes and of course the Twitterati Parties is La Mouette, the French-inspired eatery in Sea Point. Set in the courtyard with dappled sunshine, romantic fountain (not quite sure how that works, but it does), friendly service and just plain delicious food, La Mouette really does have a special place in my heart.
This year, Chef Henry and Mari, the husband and wife dream team, have started the winter specials season off early with a two-for-one tasting menu sale. Their 6 course menu of fine dining wiles includes the noteworthy croquettes, but of course, and a 'Bloody Mary' jelly with tomato espuma, a Gorgonzola and sage butternut soup, line fish with crushed potato, confit lamb with a hearty cassoulet and a crunchy cappuccino ice cream served with Nachtmusik and the lightest French doughnuts frosted with sugary crystals. Besides being a feast for the eyes, it was a feast for the senses with beautifully fresh colouring, artful presentation and served with bright shining eyes. It really was a great afternoon.
Having said that, I hope its clear that I love a languid lunch. There are few things more restorative for a Saturday afternoon and the team at La Mouette allow a person to completely relax into the rippling sound of the fountain. As simple as that sounds, there is something about that courtyard that transports a person from Regent Street, Sea Point to this idyllic oasis of French-inspired calm and ultimate tranquillity. It's masterful. It's effortless. It made me smile from my belly up.
At R240 for two people with 6 courses each, an Autumnal tasting menu at La Mouette really is great value. At that price we didn't bat an eye lid at including the wine pairing option (R160 per person) which showcased some of our local talents. The pairing was accessible and succinct. All in all, a great afternoon was had. Think I might have to make another trip there before the season is out.
