Lapa Fo'

The restaurant scene in Jozi is a strange one. People here LOVE their franchises. JB Rivers, News Cafe's and the like are perpetually busy and I'm still not completely sure why. That "High Street culture" that Captonians have perfected, with seemingly effortless flare, is only available in small hubs and I even though it's only been 4 days, I miss it. (The reason why I will be going to the Neighbourgoods Market this weekend - sanc-tu-a-ry!)

Last night I went to Lapa Fo' in Emmerentia for what was rumoured to be some pretty decent pizza. I was warned about the extensive menu: a total of around 40 pizza options, 6 pasta and 6 salads. Simply wading through the flavour choices took a while and I finally opted for artichoke, egg plant and smoked mozzarella. It's a simple choice but one of my favourites.

Now call me spoiled, because I really have been by Massimo and Tracy in Hout Bay, but I wasn't completely wowed by my meal. I could list a few reasons why but the major reason was that I didn't feel that the cheese was the best quality it could've been. The scary orange smoked mozzarella left a lot to be desired.

Other than that the candle lit dining was charming, the service was good and there was an energy about the place even though it was a rather random Tuesday eve.

So I guess my search continues. And it's not a search for the best pizza in Jo'burg but for the best produce.

  1. The pizza at Tra Bella in Illovo are the best. If you like really thin crust then try The Ant in Melville
